“May you live in interesting times!” This ancient Chinese curse has wormed its way into our glacier of illusions and its catastrophic meltdown has started and nothing can stop it now. Just let’s watch this video and get our surfing boards out. If we are lucky, we may land on a quiet shore and out of the icy waters of Alaska. If not…well, we can always pray.
When I read about all the clumsy and unbelievably daft efforts of politicians to save the crumbling consumer world standing on top of a financial pyramid of falling dominoes, I despair of their blindness and their inability to see the writing on the wall. They are giving billions and trillions of taxpayers’ money straight into the hands of incompetent gamblers and ignorant, grossly overpaid pseudo-experts. They say they are giving it to the banks, but that is a cover-up word for the deal between politicians and the dinosaurs nearing extinction, and not before time. There will be no way out except nationalisation of all financial institutions and rapid replacement of irresponsible risk-takers by teams of sober real-life experts and not trolls playing computer games. The sacking of that lot won’t stop the profound changes in the whole economic system, which is overdue for a major overhaul and replacement with a more just, responsible sharing of the world’s riches. We are already kneeling on the sacrificial ground where our materialistic attitudes, complacency and indifference to others will have to die and be transformed into new morality fit for the citizens of the XXIc earth. I trust and believe that the meltdown of the financial glacier will be over by next March. Maybe we will then open the windows of our survival Ark and await the return of the white dove with a cheerful email in its beak instead of yet another spam from the Bank of False Hopes.
